(Nov. 22, 2015): Stuff Smith – Stop, Look

From the 1958 album, Have Violin, Will Swing.  Smith (Hezekiah Leroy Gordon Smith) was one of the big three swing violinists (along with Grappelli and Venuti).  He broke in with Alphonso Trent and in the 1930s and 40s had his on Onxy Club band, which included Jonah Jones and Cozy Cole.  This LP was one of five records for Norman Granz in the late 1950s that brought Smith back into the spotlight.  He was teamed variously by Verve on these recordings with Grappelli, Dizzy Gillespie, and Oscar Peterson.  Later, in the mid 1960s he teamed up in a series of LPs with Herb Ellis, Jean-Luc Ponty, and Sun Ra.  Carl Perkins is on the piano here providing the rhythm.
