(July 30, 2015): Art Hodes and His Chicagoans – Doctor Jazz

From the 1944 10″, 78rpm single, Doctor Jazz / Shoe Shiner’s Drag.  Some King Oliver hot jazz.  A favorite of my Grandpa.  And yes, that is an early Blue Note label from the period (from 1939 to sometime in 1947) when Margulis, Lion, and Wolff were focused almost exclusively on hot jazz and small swing bands.  Art Hodes was large part of the Blue Note stable of the time.  I remember being astonished listening to a cover by the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah band on a friend’s Tadpoles LP in the 1970s.
