(May 8, 2013): Leon Thomas starring Freddie Hubbard – One

From the 1980 live album, Piece of Cake.  This LP was the last release by Thomas as a leader.  The song comes from the first album released by Thomas, the 1969 Spirits Known and Unknown.  Freddie Hubbard’s trumpet solo here was originally done by James Spalding on alto sax.  Leon Thomas is probably best known for his vocals on the nearly 20 minute long “The Creator Has A Master Plan (Peace)” off the 1969 Pharoah Saunders album, Karma.  A shorter, more mellow version is on Thomas’s subsequent Spirits LP.  A cover of the song, with Thomas on vocals, is also included on the last LP release by Louis Armstrong before his death, the 1970 album with a cast of thousands, And His Friends.
