(May 6, 2013): Michael Mantler and The Balanescu Quartet – Folly Seeing All This

From the 2003 album of the same name, Folly Seeing All This.  This is some of the most enjoyable experimental chamber jazz that I’ve heard — haunting and beautiful.  The Balanescu String Quartet provides rhythm.  Michael Mantler and another half a dozen talented soloists, including guitarist Rick Fenn and pianist Karen Mantler, provide  tightly structured improvisations that are closely integrated.  Since the 1960s, Michael Mantler has been a force on the jazz scene as a writer, player, label owner, and activist.
