(Nov 11, 2012 – Veterans Day bonus): Nora Bayes – How’ya Gonna Keep ‘em Down On The Farm?

From the 1919 78rpm Columbia 10″,  How’ya Gonna Keep ’em Down On the Farm? / When Yankee Doodle Sails Upon the Good Ship Home, Sweet Home. Walter Donaldson wrote the music to this tune in 1919 (Joe Young and Sam M. Lewis wrote the words).  It reflects, even then, the start of an exodus from rural America following WWI.  The most widely remembered version is by vaudeville legend Nora Bayes (of “Shine on Harvest Moon” fame).  While the orchestra here is unknown, it is suspected that it was that of Charles Prince.
