(Oct 28, 2012): Joan Tower – Concerto for Orchestra (Nashville Symphony – Slatkin, cond.)

From the 2005 album, Made in America.  This concerto was commissioned in 1991 by a consortium of orchestras that included the St. Louis Symphony, the New York Philharmonic, and the Chicago Symphony.  It was dedicated to philanthropist Charles Grawemeyer.  This recording by the Nashville Symphony under the direction of Leonard Slatkin includes two world priemers – the title piece, “Made in America”, and “Tambor”.  Joan Tower, of course, is one of the great composers to use novel structural forms.
