These three Barber Essays were recorded in Powell Hall in May 1988 by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.  Leonard Slatkin, Music Director of SLSO from 1979-1996, conducts.  Barber composed the first two Essays mid-twentieth century – No. 1, Op. 12 (1937) and No. 2, Op. 17 (1942).  The third Essay (No. 3, Op. 47) was composed in 1977-1978.  Slatkin brought all three together here for the first time in a recording to spectacular reviews.
